Leverage

Leverage is your broker letting you open a position larger than your balance. At 1:100, someone with 1,000 dollars can control a position worth 100,000 dollars.

How it works

The broker does not lend you money in the usual sense; it holds part of your balance as margin to secure the trade and lets you deal in the full size. The ratio between the size and the margin is what you call leverage.
