Trading hours and market sessions

The Markets and Their Instruments — Lesson 7 of 7

“The market is open 24 hours” is both true and incomplete. Yes, you can open a trade at any hour, but the market is not equal across the day: there are hours when prices move hard and hours when they are nearly dead.

The four sessions

Session	Approximate time GMT	Character
Sydney	22:00 — 07:00	quiet, limited movement
Tokyo	00:00 — 09:00	activity in the yen and the Australian dollar
London	08:00 — 17:00	the most active globally, highest liquidity
New York	13:00 — 22:00	US news and the indices
