Common mistakes

The volume profile is a powerful tool, but misusing it turns its power against you. Here are the most frequent mistakes.

What to avoid

• Trading the nodes without context: entering at the POC or a high node merely because it exists, without reading the trend, price action, and the surrounding zones.
• Choosing the wrong range: drawing a fixed-range profile over a meaningless wave, so worthless nodes come out. Choose a logical range: an accumulation or a clear wave.
• Expecting a reaction at a single point: the nodes are zones, not absolute lines; expecting a bounce at one exact price lands you in many errors.
• Neglecting the quality of the volume data: volume data in forex differs from one broker to another, and minute data is less accurate than tick data. Build your analysis on as reliable a source as possible.
• The hugging stop: placing the stop right at the edge of the node makes it prone to hunting; place it in a low-volume area behind it and account for volatility.
• Forcing every profile into a template: not every shape is perfect; make the effort to classify roughly without over-fitting.
